Coaltown Dixie, an all girl Bluegrass Band, originates from the beautiful hills of Appalachia, from Pike and Floyd counties. They enjoy playing traditional Bluegrass music as well as putting a Bluegrass spin on non-traditional Bluegrass tunes. They also incorporate many original songs that are currently being recorded. Their first CD, Hotter Than A Coal Burnin' Fire, is soon to be completed.
From Olive Hill, KY, Sasha Colette & The Magnolias is made up of Sasha Colette, vocals, banjo, guitar; Jose Oreta, upright bass; and Joey Thieman, accordion, drums. Born loving the sounds of Billy Joe Shaver, the Truck Stop Juke Box and Neko Case, Colette draws on traditional, folk, country blues, Americana and the occasional alternative tune, including plenty southern front porch melodies.
Hazel Holler is an all-girl group from Eastern Kentucky, playing regional Appalachian music, almost-forgotten country songs, bluegrass and original songs.
Formed in 2003, Hazel Holler has kept audiences dancing and grinning everywhere they go. The band is made up of: Stacy York handles lead vocals and plays rhythm guitar. She has played bluegrass all her life, performed with many well-known musicians, and lives in Berea. She has 2 sons who are also musicians.
Shirley Seim saws the fiddle and sings harmonies and a few leads. Raised in Seattle, she first heard a bluegrass band at age 19, and in 2002 she migrated from that bluegrass mecca to Kentucky to play music. She lives with her dog in Ashland.
Michelle Wallace plays bass and also sings. She is a recent graduate of Morehead State University and is the host of Bluegrass Sunday, which can be heard from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday on 90.3 FM locally, or online at www.msuradio.com. Besides holding down our bottom end, she is becoming well-known for her great Mama Hazel's Salsa, which she usually has with her. She lives on a farm in Sandy Hook.
Jackie Thacker grew up playing music, along with her brother Ben, also a musician. She's an elementary school teacher, and has two teenagers of her own. She lives in Fleming County and plays a banjo her father put together for her.
